ASA Cheerleading

The ASA Cheerleading Team was started in 2008 to lead the ASA fans in cheering on their teams. The team was created to give a cheer and dance option for ASA students whose interests lie in those specific areas.

The cheerleading team will be a staple at the Men’s and Women’s home basketball games, as well as home Football games. Eventually, the program intends to compete in regional and national tournaments. ASA cheerleading will practice twice a week close to the Brooklyn campus.
During the summer of 2009, Karroll King, was named the Head Coach of ASA Cheerleading. The Queens native first started dancing at Dance Dimensions, and cheering at Stella Maris H.S. at 14 years of age. Coach King would take that same passion for the two arts to Brooklyn College in 2001. While at Brooklyn, Ms. King continued her dancing and began modeling. She was also a member and two-year captain for the BC Elite, the Brooklyn College cheer squad.

Right after graduating in 2006, Coach King began dancing with Hypnotized Dance Company. Along with focusing on her own dancing career, King took on triple duty as a cheerleading gymnastics coach at Tumble Town in the Bronx, as well being a cheerleading choreographer for Cardinal Spellman High School's competition season.

Excited about the task at hand, Coach King explains, 'I am excited about working for ASA and taking everything I have learned to help guide the team to the top.

Baseball

After a respectable 17-13 season finish in its first season of existence as a program in 2009, the ASA Baseball Team came back with a bang in 2010.  The team finished with a 31-12 overall record including a number of team highlights for the season.  The Avengers ended the regular season with a 27-10 win-loss record, with key wins against Region XV powers, Nassau (Division III) and Monroe College (Division I).   Between March 13, 2010 and May 2, 2010, the Avengers were only defeated six times in thirty-one tries.  That strong effort during the regular carried over into the post-season where the team would go head-to-head against conference rival, Monroe College in a three-game Region XV Division I championship series.  Despite dropping the final two meetings with Monroe towards the end of the regular season, the Avenger bats would come alive in Game 1 of the series, winning in dramatic fashion by the score of 13-12.  Game 2 proved that ASA had the right to move on to the Region XX championships in Hagerstown, MD, as freshman lefty pitcher, Michael Avila (Glendale, NY/Aviation H.S.), tossed eight solid innings to get the 12-4 win and series sweep.  The title would allow the Avengers to move on to the Region XX tournament, with the winner advancing to the Eastern District Championships against the winner of the North Carolina and South Carolina conference winners.  ASA would make a strong push to the championship round of the tournament, winning two games against Chesapeake and #1 seeded host, Hagerstown, before falling to Potomac State in heartbreaking fashion 12-11 in the finals of the tournament..... More

As ASA's first head baseball coach, Francisco Perez brings with him a reputation for winning and a talent for imparting his own passion for competing on to his players. Throughout his years coaching players ofa wide range of ages and abilities, Perez has shown a knack for energizing teams and turning them into winners.

Before launching the ASA program, Perez was the head coach at Globe Institute of Technology where he took the Knights from a 9-21 recordthe year before he arrived to playing .500 ball and advancing to the finals in the 2008 NJCAA regional playoffs in his first year coaching the team.
In addition to his commitment to ASA, Perez is the director of baseball operations for the NY Gothams, a respected youth program he's headed since the organization's inception in 2000. Over the course of eight seasons with the NY Gothams, the teams he's coached have amassed an impressive 371/129 win loss record. His tournament wins are numerous and highlighted by three national championships, including the 16U ECTB National Championship in 2006, the 16U AAU National Tournament in 2003 and the 14U AAU Disney World Championship in 2002.
In addition to team wins, over 15 of the NY Gothams players that Perezhas coached have been recruited to play for colleges including Fordham College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Wake Forest, St. John's College, University of Michigan and Wesleyan University. Ten have been drafted by professional teams and the entire organization is especially proud of the Milwaukee Brewers 2008 call up of catcher Angel Salome, who works out with the NY Gothams in the off season and also helps to coach some of its players.
Before joining ASA, Perez directed the baseball program for Trinity School, an academically top-ranked private school located in Manhattan. Unfazed by the team's 50-plus-year championship drought and an unimpressive 1-12 win loss record posted in the year prior to his arrival, Perez create a program with a focus on individual player development and within four years brought home the Independent Schools State Championship.
More than just a coach, Perez knows personally what it takes to compete in the game at its highest levels. At the age of 17, he attended Hill College on full scholarship and was recruited by the Seattle Mariners organization. For two years he was a middle infielder in the Mariners farm system, followed by a year with the New York Yankees. He then played in two independent leagues before transitioning into coaching. Perez has placed a priority on maintaining ties with the many coaches and organizations with which he has contact over the course of his years playing the game.

During the summer of 2009, Marshall Shimasaki was hired as ASA’s assistant baseball coach. Coach Shimasaki comes to ASA with a number of years coaching youth baseball on the travel and AAU circuit. For the past four years, he has been affiliated with the NY Gothams, a premier travel baseball organization where he worked with Coach Perez as an assistant coach/team administrator. During two of those years, Shimasaki served on the organization’s board of trustees.
With many years of experience in private business, Coach Shimasaki will bring his knowledge of organization and management to an already successful baseball program. As Coach Perez’s assistant, Coach Shimasaki’s responsibilities will include recruiting, overseeing the team’s strength and conditioning sessions, practice and in-game coaching, and heading the team’s academic monitoring program.

Men's Basketball

The Men’s Basketball team completed its 2009-10, falling to Monroe College 71-67 in Region XV championship game. This marks the second year in a row that the Avengers have reached the finals in only its second year of existence as a program. The team finished with a 22-6 record under Head Coach, Ken Wilcox. This is a vast improvement from the program’s start-up year, where they finished with a 14-13 overall record.

The 2009-10 Avengers started off on a tear, going undefeated in their first 10 games. The Avengers first loss came against Globe on December 15th. However, ASA would avenge the loss by defeating Globe in the next two contests; once, on January 4th by the score of 88-67, and the second, in the Region 15 Division I Tournament semi-finals by the score 66-53. The Avengers’ other extensive winning-streak came between December 30 and January 27th where they would take 6 straight.

In terms of individual accolades, the team faired well in the selection process for post-season awards. Sophomore forward, Roberto Colonette (Queens, NY/RFK), was voted Region XV Division I Player of the Year as well as NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American.  Colonette ended the season averaging 13.2ppg , 8.5rpg, and 2bpg. His consistent play and character on and off of the basketball court earned him both honors. Joining Colonette on one of the All-Region teams was sophomore guard, Garel Craig (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack), who was voted to the second-team. Craig finished the season, leading the Avengers in scoring with 16.2ppg and in assists with 4 per game. He had a season high in points against Nia Prep, including (4) 3-point field goals.

Ken Wilcox is the first Athletic Director and  Men's Basketball coach at ASA.  With the challenge of starting an athletic  department from scratch a daunting task, he is no stranger to this  challenge.  Previously Coach Wilcox built a nationally recognized  basketball program as a coach and as an Athletic Director at Globe Institute of  Technology.  Coach Wilcox started the Globe athletic department back in  1998 with basketball as a club team and over the past 10 years helped develop  and grow 15 intercollegiate programs with many teams being nationally ranked in  the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).  As an athletic  administrator Coach Wilcox built the only Division One Junior College athletic  department in the northeast.

Coach Wilcox, while at Globe, built the Men's Basketball program  into a nationally recognized program.   The early success of the ASA men’s basketball program has set the tone  for even bigger and better results.  In  fact, just this past season (2008-2009) under his guidance the ASA  men’s basketball team was a finalist in the Region 15 Division One Men's  Basketball championship game in only the first year of existence. This tremendous first season accomplishment comes on the heels  of his last season at Globe (2007-2008) when he coached the team to the Region  15 Division One Men's Basketball regular season and post season championships  and helped guide them to the District 3 Championship Game.

Coach Wilcox garnered the 2007-2008  Region 15 Coach of the Year along the way as well as winning the regional coach  of the year honors also in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.  Coach Wilcox success  in Region 15 is also shown by 6 regular season or post season regional  championship in 8 years including the last 5.  Coach Wilcox record over  the past 3 years in Division One regional competition is 17-4 while overall he  has gone undefeated in regular season conference play 3 times.  In  2004-2005 Coach Wilcox led his team to 'Hutch', the NJCAA Division One National  Championship Tournament in Hutchinson, KS while earning District 3 Coach of the  Year honors.  That season solidified the program he built from scratch as  a national power.

Overall, Coach Wilcox has helped 24 former players move on to NCAA Division One  programs including student athletes transferring to the Big East, Conference  USA, Big 12 and Colonial. Over 50 players have moved on to 4-year schools at  other levels.  He has coached 5 players that have received All-American  honors by numerous magazines and athletic associations including back to back  NJCAA 2nd team All-Americans in Rob Robinson 06' and Jamual Warren 05';   Rob Robinson (Robert Morris) 2007,  Jamual Warren (Cincinnati)  Jamal  Nichols (Depaul) in 2004, Jimmie Inglis (Rutgers) in 2002 and Mike McKie (St.  Peters) in 2001.  He also coached one of  the few junior college players that had been drafted to the NBA in Victor  Sanikidze from the Republic of Georgia.  He was drafted #42 of the second  round of the 2004 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks.

Devonne Martinez joins the ASA men's basketball staff with years of experience in the New York City basketball scene as a high school and collegiate player and then as a college coach.  A former two time All Region junior college player for current ASA Head Coach Kenney Wilcox, Coach Martinez continued his education and basketball career for two years at Kentucky State University.  Coach Martinez returned to New York and has been an assistant coach for Coach Wilcox the past three years.  He is the recruiting coordinator for the Men's Basketball program as well as running all the weight training and individual instruction.

Coach Radoncic enters his first season with ASA. He arrives with Head Coach, Kenney Wilcox, from Globe Tech. Radoncic is no stranger to Wilcox’s system, as he has been on his staffs for the past 4 years. He also played for Coach Wilcox on two very successful Globe teams that advanced deep into the post-season both years. Prior to coaching at Globe, Radoncic continued his collegiate playing career at St. Francis College (Brooklyn, NY).
Radoncic has a lot of knowledge of the New York City basketball world that will be essential to ASA’s success. He will assist in all aspects of coaching with the staff including recruiting, in-game coaching, practice preparation, and scouting. Coach Radoncic will also take on double duty as the Housing Coordinator for the ASA dormitory building.

In only its first season of existence as a women’s basketball program, Coach Revell was able to lead the Lady Avengers to an 11-8 record and ASA’s first regular season championship in any of the department’s sports.  The season was capped off by an appearance in the Region XV Division I championship game.  Key wins for the Lady Avengers included three regular season wins over rival TCI and a win against Monroe College, which snapped a six-year, 59 game home win streak.  For her efforts and her team’s efforts, Coach Revell garnered 2009-2010 Region XV Division I Coach of the Year Honors.  In addition to her own individual accolades, Coach Revell recruited the 2009-10 Region XV Division I Player of the Year and Third Team NJCAA All-American, Denyse Moore.  Joining Moore on the All-Region First Team was sophomore, Tyche’ Mozie.  The Lady Avengers also had three freshmen on the All-Region Second Team with Leryncia Miller, Shanade Bernard, and Patrice Lewis all being honored.

Coach Revell joined the ASA Athletic Department as the first ever Head Women’s Basketball Coach.  The Brooklyn, NY native is in her comfort zone with many years of experience on the New York City basketball scene.  She has played for some of the city’s top AAU programs for girls.  Most notably, under the guidance of Exodus AAU Coach Apache Paschal, she became the first female player from the club to receive a full-athletic Scholarship from a Division I University.

Coach Revell began her college basketball career at the University of Rhode Island, but the more academically-inclined Revell transferred to Barnard College of Columbia University, and finished off her collegiate basketball career playing in the Ivy League. While at the University of Rhode Island, she was on the Dean’s List, joined the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, and made the Atlantic-10 Student-Athlete Honor Roll. Revell graduated with a BA in Psychology from Barnard College of Columbia University.  While at Columbia, Revell finished her senior season leading her team in rebounds, steals, while finishing 2nd in points (1 point from 1st) & assists.  With the opportunity to play in Puerto Rico upon graduation, she passed on the opportunity to heal a stress fracture in her left leg that she suffered two months into her senior season.

Prior to ASA, Revell became the youngest board member for U WANT GAME, a non-profit organization dedicated to mentoring at-risk high school student athletes.  She also worked part-time with the NY KNICKS as a camp basketball coach and field-marketing representative. Revell has also volunteered as a basketball coach and consultant for non-profit organizations such as her alma mater Exodus, New Heights, and the Jerry McCullough SEA Foundation
